Step-by-Step Easy American Flag Tutorial
Start on the left side of your paper and draw two tall, straight, parallel vertical lines to create the flagpole.

At the very top of the flagpole, draw a circle with a small oval base connecting it to the pole. This ornament is called a finial!

Draw a large, sweeping curved line out to the right to mark the waving outer edge of the flag. Add a small line extending from the middle of the pole.

Connect the top of the flagpole to the top of your right edge using a flowing, wavy line. Now it looks like it’s blowing in the wind!

Draw another wavy line along the bottom, connecting the outer edge back to the flagpole to close the flag shape.

In the top left corner of the flag, draw a square shape (called the canton). Then, draw some wavy stripes across the middle of the flag.

Draw the rest of the wavy stripes all the way down to the bottom of the flag. Make sure they follow the curve of the fabric!

Draw lots of tiny stars inside the top left square. Add some wrinkle lines along the flagpole side and middle to make the fabric look realistic.

Color the canton dark blue, and color every other stripe red (leaving the rest white). Color the flagpole brown and the top finial gold.

Wave Direction: Keep all your wavy lines curving the same direction to make the flag look like it’s blowing consistently in the wind!
Star Count: You don’t need to draw all 50 stars perfectly — a scattered pattern of small stars looks great and is much easier!
